Our Story
Wakuwaku, which means ‘Heart Beat’, was founded by old friends Chef Makoto (Co-Owner and Executive Chef of Cocoro restaurant, which has been consistently recognised among the best in the country) and Jason Lee.
The pair met at Rikka restaurant when Makoto came to New Zealand 20 years ago. Their old dream of opening a restaurant together finally came true here in Remuera. The birth of Wakuwaku paved the way for a unique opportunity for Chef Lucas Lee to develop a menu inspired by traditional Japanese cuisine with some delightful modern twists.
Lucas collaborated closely with Chef Makoto and Jason to design and create a flavoursome and unique menu drawn from all his previous experiences in Clooney, The French Cafe and Cocoro.
WakuWaku’s front house team is led by Jake McAllister, offering cocktails served with Asian twists, premium Sake, craft beers and a wine list made of international wines matching WakuWaku’s scrumptious food.
